This is the primary
survey of some of the basic Muslim Institutions like mosque
Makita's,madras's,primary,secondary and higher secondary schools in the city of Calcutta
.The main object of the survey has been to obtain accurate knowledge about the mode of
their functioning and the nature of the problems faced by them.,to facilitate reformatory
and welfare work,by creating awareness of the problem they face.The institutions are
normally the mirrors of the society in which they are situated and institutions in
Calcutta are no exception.The study suggests that by putting the institutions on right
track a lot of desirable change can be brought about.in the society leading it to progress
and prosperity.

The Author:
M.K.A. Siddiquie (b. 1929) is a cultural Anthropologist. Having been associated with the
Anthropological Survey of India, Government of India, for over 33 years since 1953. He
joined the ICCSR as a Senior Fellow in 1987, completing his tenure in 1989. Dr. Siddiqui
was associated with the Asiatic Society, Calcutta in 1883 as Research Professor and held
the position till 1997. He has over a dozen of books and monographs and more than 100
scientific papers to his credit. His major works include "Muslims of Calcutta : A
Study in Aspects of Social Organisation", "Aspects of Society and Culture in
Calcutta", "Educating A Backward Minority", "Acculturation and Social
Change in India", "Hindu-Muslim Relations", "Inter-caste and
Inter-community Relationship : Development" etc.
