A one-day seminar on “Research Methodology in Islamic Perspective” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on April 20, 2019. Prof. Ishteyaque Danish, convener of the programme and finance secretary, IOS, in his introduction of the theme, said that capitalism was an exploitative ideology. He stated that method and knowledge were value-based and they should be connected to our social life. The capitalist world would use human rights to assail communism adding that capitalism was responsible for making Pakistan a consumer society. Perhaps this was due to farming being confined to Punjab and Baluchistan registering a boom in service sector. This explained why economic libralisation in Pakistan came before India.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies organised a lecture on “The Bright Imprint of Urdu Seerah Writing” at its conference hall on March 30, 2019. The lecture was delivered by the Chairman, Adabiyaat-e-Alia Academy, New Delhi, Dr. Tabish Mehdi, who held that there were only two ways by which the message of Allah reached human beings. These were Allah’s Commandments to man and Seerahs (lives) of His messengers on earth. Both of them had always been incumbent on the faithful and overlooking them might deprive one of the correct understandings of Islam. Such a person would drive himself away from the Commandments of Allah. This was the reason why, he said right-thinking and conscious people considered both of them beacons for the entire humanity. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Hasina Hashia, professor of Geography, Jamia Millia Islamia and assistant secretary general, IOS described the charter as a universal document accepted by all religions. IOS Lecture on the book Islam and Knowledge: Al Faruqi’s concept of Religion in Islamic Thought

The Institute of Objective Studies organised a lecture based on the review of the book Islam and Knowledge: Al-Faruqi’s Concept of Religion in Islamic Thought edited by Dr. Imtiyaz Yusuf, in its conference room on February 8, 2019. Prof. Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi, Head of the Department of Religious Studies, ex-Dean, School of Social Sciences, Central University of Kashmir, former director of Shah-i-Hamdan Institute of Islamic Studies, University of Kashmir, who delivered the lecture, said that the Islamic scholar, Dr. Ismail Raji al-Faruqi’s work Islam and Knowledge was one of the finest books written on the subject. The book dealt with various aspects of Tawhid (oneness of Allah or monotheism), Islamic beliefs, etc. in great detail. He said that al-Faruqi’s concept of religion in Islamic thought was today part of the curriculum of Islamic Studies in different universities of the world. One of the main features of his interpretation of Islam was its presentation within contemporary parameters. He stood out as an Islamic scholar who never compromised on his premises. Prof. Rafiabadi observed that though he lived in the United States, he did not allow the US culture to influence him. Instead, he presented the Islamic perspective on life and Islamic culture to Americans. In his book, Ismail Raji argued how a new-born child had Islamic traits. He differed with Imam Ghazali on several issues and held an independent point of view.   More...

Initiating the discussion, Maulana Abdul Hameed Noumani, secretary general, All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat, said that Hindutva and nationalism had generated an intense discourse after 2014. A two-day national conference on “The Life and Contributions of Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani” (1892-1956), was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies, Patna on December 1-2, 2018. Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani, an eminent Islamic scholar of British India, was born on October 1, 1892 in a small village, Gilan, in Nalanda district about 100 km from Patna. He is often referred to as “Muhaqqiq-i-Islam” (researcher of Islam), “Sultan-ul-Qalam” (king of pen) and “Mutakallim-i-Millat” (spokesman of the community). The conference was a befitting tribute to him as an Islamic scholar and writer of repute. The conference was spread over eight sessions, including inaugural and valedictory sessions.   More...

Fuller’s Future of Political Islam. Fuller’s book written in 2003 generated a serious debate among experts on Islamic history with opinion sharply divided over the intent of the author. The book assumes importance because Fuller had served as the vice-chairman of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and spent several years in five Muslim countries, including Muslim areas of China and Russia.   More...

Annual Meeting of IOS Governing Council & General Assembly Lecture on “Current Situation in Turkey: An Overview”

The 32nd meeting of the General Assembly (GA) of the Institute of Objective Studies was held here on September 2, 2018 to ratify the minutes of the previous GA, which met on August 13, 2017. The GA also considered the follow-up report on decisions taken at the last meeting. Besides, it approved the 32nd Annual Report of the IOS for the year 2017-2018 as recommended by the Governing Council (GC). The meeting was also marked by election of office-bearers and executive members of the Institute for a period of five years, i.e., 2018-2023. The executive members who formed the core group of 15 then re-elected the current chairman, IOS, Dr. M. Manzoor Alam, for a tenure of five years. Other office- bearers, who were elected include, Prof. ZM Khan as Secretary General, Prof. M. The countries that were represented at the conference included Turkey, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. Seventh IOS Lifetime Achievement Award conferred on Prof. Akhtarul Wasey

The Seventh IOS Award for Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the eminent scholar, president (vice-chancellor) of Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur and professor emeritus, Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, by the Institute of Objective Studies at a ceremony organised by the Institute at the auditorium of the Engineering Faculty, Jamia Millia Islamia on March 30, 2018. He was presented with a cheque of Rs. 1 lakh as the amount of the award by the chairman of the Institute, Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam amidst thunderous applause by the audience who overflowed the hall. Prof. Wasey was also presented the scroll of honour by the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, former Union minister and currently Member of Parliament, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The former Chief Justice of India, Justice AM Ahmadi, who presided over the function, presented him with a memento. A 20-minute film on Prof. Wasey, produced by the IOS, was released by the ex-Union minister, Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, who was the guest of honour. IOS ORGANISES NINTH QAZI MUJAHIDUL ISLAM MEMORIAL LECTURE ON “POPULAR SCIENCE IN URDU LITERATURE & ITS DISSEMINATION”

The ninth Qazi Mujahidul Islam Memorial Lecture on “Popular Science in Urdu Literature & its Dissemination” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on March 17, 2018. Dr. Mohammad Khalil, former scientist, CSIR and editor, Science ki Duniya, who delivered the lecture, surveyed the scientific writing in Urdu. He said that the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, laid the foundation of scientific and technological development by getting a science policy resolution passed in 1959. Nehru presided over the CSIR which controlled 40 laboratories. These laboratories laid the road map for industrial development of the country. Referring to the use of Urdu as a medium for acquiring scientific knowledge, he said that this could contribute a great deal to the change in the life-style of the common man. During the last 350 years, Europe made strides in scientific development with the result that the industrial revolution put it on the top of the world. This was not the case with Urdu, which was lacking in scientific literature. The first book on science in Urdu was Bahre Hikmah, which came out in 1798. The book was the Urdu translation of Parkinson’s work in English and contained information on measurements.   More...

It began on February 16. A two-day national seminar on “Towards Equality, Justice and Fraternity in Contemporary India – Creating a Better Tomorrow Through History”, was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at Chennai on December 2-3, 2017 in collaboration with The New College, Chennai, as part of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of the Institute. The response of the academia and the intelligentsia of Chennai was overwhelming as was evidenced by their presence in large numbers. The standard of the papers presented by scholars was high as the study of Indian history, particularly medieval and modern, was discussed threadbare. Almost every aspect of history, including the writing of history and its methodology, was discussed in detail. Academics who read their papers, shared their knowledge of history they acquired during their career as researchers and teacher. The keen interest evinced by the audience was reflected in the level of sophistication and number of questions and supplementary questions put to the speakers. The engagement of the audience with speakers was proof enough of the curiosity generated by the topic to know more of history.  More...

Bengaluru Dec, 9, 2017: The Institute of Objective Studies, New Delhi, organised a lecture on the subject "Major books of seerah written in Kannada". The lecture was delivered in Kannada by Abdussalam Puthige, editor-in-chief Kannada daily Vartha Bharthi at Darus Salam Building, Queens Road.

Puthige said that efforts would be made for the introduction of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life in a larger way. The Muslim community of Karnataka had been keeping a distance from the Kannada language, the result of which was insufficient number of books on seerah in Kannada.  More...

The Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) organised a lecture on “GST: Challenges and Impact” on August 25, 2017 at its conference room. The lecture was delivered by the Director, Acquitas Research and visiting professor, ISB, Hyderabad, Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, who traced the history of goods and services tax in India. It was the ex-Prime Minister, VP Singh, who first mooted the idea of a uniform goods and services tax in the country. Later on, Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee set up a committee to go into the issue. The UPA government also deliberated on the GST, but it was vehemently opposed by the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, now the most vociferous proponent of it. He said that the industry wholeheartedly supported the BJP during the parliamentary elections of 2014 in return for the promise to annule the land acquisition law. In order to keep the promise, the Modi government tabled the first resolution in 2014. Since several BJP members of Parliament opposed the move, the government shifted its focus to GST in order to benefit the industry.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) organised a lecture on “Constitution and Constitutionalism in Indian Context” on August 13, 2017 at the conference hall of the Institute to mark the 31st Annual Meeting of General Assembly. Presided over by the chairman of Delhi State Minorities Commission, Dr. Zafrul Islam Khan, the lecture was delivered by the former Dean, faculty of Social Sciences, JMI and Secretary General, IOS, Prof. ZM Khan. In the lecture, he insisted that a carefully crafted Constitution had been overtly based on the sound principles of Constitutionalism, particularly mentioned in the Preamble. India as a nation was fortunate that it had a long history of liberation movement involving people in general for over 150 years. He said that the participation of common people also provided new vigour and rigour to values of Constitutionalism. India might easily claim as a nation to be the biggest liberal democracy in the world. Democracy did not mean majoritarianism or dictatorship of votes, he clarified.   More...

IOS Discussion on the book “Hindustan mein Dini Sahafat Ka Manzarnama”

A discussion on the book “Hindustan mein Dini Sahafat Ka Manzarnama” (The Scenario of Religious Journalism in India), was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on May 13, 2017. Initiating the discussion, the author of the book and a veteran Urdu journalist, Suhail Anjum, commented that the number of religious journals and periodicals had gone up abnormally and what was needed was to honestly critique the journals published in the past as well as the present, irrespective of their association with one school of thought or the other. He noted that the labour he put in during the last 4-5 years resulted in a book which was his individual venture. The book saw the light of the day due to the interest shown by the IOS chairman, Dr. M. Manzoor Alam. “Maybe, there are some shortcomings in the book, but this is my first such work”, he said. It was up to the reviewers to suggest further additions for making it more useful. He insisted that he honestly accessed the journals representing various schools of Islamic thought to the best of his capabilities and gave them a proper place in his book.   More...

Calicut: The Institute of Objective Studies (Calicut chapter) organised a five-day “Summer Teens Youth Camp”, for higher secondary and undergraduate-level students, from May 8 to 12, 2017 at Government Youth Hostel, Calicut. It attracted boys and girls from different parts of the state making it a unique experience for participants. The camp consisted of more than twenty different sessions and presentations led by prominent scholars and trainers on a variety of topics ranging from Islam to contemporary social, political, educational and environmental issues. Fifty chosen students, half of them girls, attended the camp. They did not only listen to the lectures but also showcased their skills in arts and sports. They prayed, played and ate together, and went home with the memories of five eventful and life-changing days.   More...

A workshop on “Managing, Measuring and Maximising the Intellectual Capital of IOS in Digital Environment” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on April 29, 2017. Speaking at the workshop, the Chairman of IOS, Dr. M. Manzoor Alam said that we were living in digital India and we had to be digital. He further stressed that digitalisation had become important in the present context as data collection and its dissemination was just a matter of seconds. This facilitated fast work of an organisation which meant saving time and money. This also led to less, or almost no, pendency of work. Referring to an incident in UAE some 10 years ago, he said that the then king of the Emirate had ordered all government servants to become computer savvy or else they would face the axe. His order had a salutary effect on them: they became computer literate and started working on computers. He asked those working in the IOS to emulate the example and reduce paper work by switching over to computer.   More...

IOS Consultative Meet on Post-Election Scenario in Uttar Pradesh

A consultative meet on “Post Election Scenario in Uttar Pradesh” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference room on April 13, 2017. The participants in the meet were seized of the growing influence of Hindutva that was taking in its stride state after state. UP being the latest example where development agenda of the Samajwadi Party and the social engineering formula of the Bahujan Samaj Party failed to elicit support of the electorate which, if put together, would have secured more votes than the Bhartiya Janata Party got in percentage terms. But that would not be. Initiating the discussion, the Secretary General of the IOS, Prof. ZM Khan, said that the BJP government in UP was tightening its grip over all institutions of democracy. Secularism was its first casualty and the minorities as well as other weaker sections were being harassed. The government was trying to create ghettos for Muslims. There was no space for tolerance and respect for others. He said that the space occupied by the media, NGOs and other civil society groups was being narrowed by government control. “Sab ka Sath, Sab ka Vikas” had been reduced to a farce. He urged those who cherished values of secularism to come out in the open to counter the false propaganda of the RSS. This needed a lot of support from the people and intellectuals. Joining hands with like-minded people was imperative as the RSS had occupied a vast space with manpower, money and muscle power. Referring to efforts of the IOS to study the issues and come out with conclusions, he said that it had contributed to the understanding of the current scenario. A lecture on “Will Demonetisation Eliminate Black Money and Corruption?” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference room on January 21, 2017. Prof. Amir Ullah Khan, Director, Aequitas Research and Visiting Professor, ISB, Hyderabad, who was the main speaker, held that the announcement to demonetise high-value currency notes of Rs 500 and 1000 denominations, was not necessitated by any economics but by extraneous factors like casualties of army jawans in Pathankot, situation created by the suicide of Rohit Vemula in the Central University of Hyderabad and disappearance of JNU student, Najeeb Ahmad in mysterious circumstances, etc. These incidents mounted pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to divert attention of the people and come out with the announcement that could be hailed as unparalleled in independent India’s history. This announcement impacted the psyche of the nation as the headlines of electronic and print media dramatically changed immediately after the Prime Minister addressed the nation on the night of November 8 last year. A lecture on “Higher Education - Status of Muslims vis-a-vis Other Social Groups, in India – 2015” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies here on December 8, 2016. Speaking on the subject, manager (research) data bank, Institute of Objective Studies, Md. Mutawassim Khan, held that the percentage of Muslims pursuing higher education was lowest compared to Hindus and Christians who accounted for 20 and 13 percent respectively. According to the draft report prepared by the Union ministry of human resource development, only 11 percent Muslims took up higher education. He said that the figures of other communities were above the national average of 18.8 percent. He noted that the draft report was based on the National Sample Survey (2009-10) data. The low percentage among Muslims could be attributed to various socio-economic reasons. He observed that the situation was worse in rural areas as only 6.7 percent Muslims took up higher education.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies held a condolence meeting at its conference hall on September 3, 2016 to mourn the death of the former governor of Bihar, West Bengal and Haryana and the ex-chairman of the Union Public Service Commission, and a recipient of the prestigious civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan, Dr. Akhlaqur Rehman Kidwai. Paying glowing tributes to the memory of Dr. Kidwai, the Chairman of IOS, Dr. M. Manzoor Alam recalled his valuable services to society and state. He said that Dr. Kidwai was a strategist and a planner who proved that devotion to duty was key to success. He announced that IOS would discharge its moral duty to bring to light the multi-faceted personality of Dr. Kidwai. He urged Dr Kidwai’s close family members to do their bit by establishing a foundation in his name to perpetuate his memory. He insisted that since Dr. Kidwai had an unbounded interest in science, a scholarship in science could be instituted in his name. The Institute of Objective Studies organised a Consultative Meeting on New Education Policy on August 9, 2016 at Nehru House, Jamia Millia Islamia. Initiating the discussion, the Secretary General, IOS, Prof. ZM Khan, highlighted the main points in the new education policy and said that the Preamble to the Indian Constitution spoke of secularism which could only be achieved through the process of secularisation. Education was a means of socialisation, though it had always been a state subject. Basic education required a lot of thinking as that was the very foundation on which the development of the faculties of children rested. He explained that higher education did not require much to be done as the students in higher portals of knowledge were left to fend for themselves. But what constituted a threat to education was the nationalist agenda of right-wingers who, if not stopped, would inflict an irreparable damage on our polity. He said that the IOS was engaged in debating issues like education and social backwardness of the marginalised sections. The Institute had also taken care of regional identities and aspirations of people by undertaking their case studies. He said that the silver lining in an atmosphere of despondency was that the people in general were very tolerant.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies’ three-day 30th Annual General Assembly Meeting and the 60th Governing Council meeting attended by delegates from Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir concluded on August 7, 2016. The progress of the decisions taken at the earlier meeting was reviewed. The delegates unanimously endorsed the progress of various projects under review. The delegates discussed the issues in the context of the country and the Muslim community threadbare and took several important decisions by a voice vote. A lecture on “Usury to Interest: History and Possible Lessons” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on July 30, 2016. Delivering the lecture, Dr. Kaleem Alam, Researcher, Islamic Economics Institute (IEI), King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, observed that usury meant excessive interest charged on the borrower which was illegal and was prohibited. With the passage of time, those who traded or prastised usury were disliked by the society. This brought the clergy face to face with the rulers who became more assertive leading to the development from usury to interest. He explained that those who were in the business of usury were known as “usurers”. The Jews were known to be dealing in usury, though it was prohibited to them by Judaism. They continued to do the business as usual by interpreting religion in their own interest which, according to them, was permitted. They practised of usury while dealing with non-Jews. The Institute of Objective Studies organised a discussion on “Liberty and Fraternity in the Constitution: A Review” on July 16, 2016 at Nehru House, Jamia Millia Islamia in association with the Democratic People’s Lawyer Association (DPLA), Citizens For Democracy (CFD) and the All India Milli Council (AIMC). Introducing the theme, Prof. M. Afzal Wani, Professor, school of Law & Legal Studies, G. G. Singh Indraprastha University and Asstt. Secretary General, IOS stressed that it was fraternity that was cardinal for integrating humanity. It strengthened the belief that all human beings belonged to the same earliest parents. In the absence of basic traits of humanism, human vision got narrower. If that happened, man would destroy everything before being destroyed himself. Referring to the Quranic teachings, “Best among you is one who performs best” he said that this was also applicable to our Constitution which set for itself the goal of fraternity. Violation of the Constitution meant violation of humanity. Prof., Deptt. of Islamic Studies, AMU, who delivered the lecture, dwelt at length on the present state of progress in the Muslim world in the field of education, technology, economy, research and innovation, space science, media, sports, etc. He pointed to certain amazing facts about the standard of development in the Muslim majority countries in comparison to some leading nations of the world. Commenting on the total world population of about 7.068 billion, he said that Christians accounted for 33.39 percent followed by the Muslims who were 22.74 percent. While Hindus constituted 13.8 percent, Buddhists accounted for 6.77 percent, Sikhs 0.35 percent, Jews 0.22 percent, Bahais 0.11 percent and the followers of other religions constituted 10.95 percent. This also included the figure of non-religious people and atheists who accounted for 9.66 percent and 2.01 percent respectively. He held that the Muslim population was 1.65 billion and the Jewish population stood at 14 million Muslims were 117 times the Jews.   More...

A lecture on “Communal Violence and the Identity of Groups” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its Conference hall on May 21, 2016. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Shamim A. Ansari, Professor of Psychology at Aligarh Muslim University, observed that communal violence was one of the most vulnerable conditions that not only widened the gap among the groups, but was also detrimental to nation’s growth and development. This was the tragedy of the Indian sub-continent that no one realised the cost of communal violence in terms of men, material and economic resources, he said. Emphasising the need for controlling communal violence for the sake of nation-building, he said that the identification of reasons for such a national social evil was very important. The Institute of Objective Studies organised the Eighth Qazi Mujahidul Islam Memorial Lecture on “The Life and Literary Contribution of Mir Hasan Dehlvi” on March 26, 2016 at the conference hall of the Institute. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Qazi Obaidur Rahman Hashmi, former head, department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, said that Mir Hasan left Delhi grudgingly along with his father, Mir Zahak and other members of the family in the wake of Ahmed Shah Abdali’s attack on Delhi in 1758. After staying briefly at Deg near Delhi, he reached Lucknow after suffering hardships in the arduous journey. Lucknow could not attract him for long and he moved to Faizabad where he felt at home. The period from 1728 to 1786 could be described as Mir Hasan’s life-time which was very turbulent for the Moghul period. He explained that Mir Hasan’s literary journey assumed importance from the historical point of view as several Urdu poets, including Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Rafi Sauda, etc., were his contemporaries. This was the time when Mirza Sauda’s Urdu poetry was at its height when the duo, Mir Hasan and his father Mir Ghulam Husain Zahak were staying at Faizabad. Though Mir Hasan was much younger than Mirza Sauda, he had started writing Urdu poems at an early age in Delhi. According to the Kulliyaat-i- Mir Hasan (collected works of Mir Hasan), he tried every form of poetry - ghazal, qasidah, rubai, marsia, mathnawi, etc. Mir Hasan attained fame for his Mathnawi Sahrulbayan which was the finest example of his mastery ever language and diction.   More...

A lecture on “The Budget 2016: Correcting Past Mistakes, or Making New Ones” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its Conference Hall on March 5, 2016. Delivering the lecture, Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, Advisor, Gates Foundation and visiting professor, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, described the budget as the worst presented by any finance minister in the last few years. He said that the big disappointment with the NDA even for its own declared fans was that it was unable to match its own rhetoric and promises in what was its most important budget exercise half way through its term. Referring to the promise of bringing back black money stashed away in tax havens abroad, he said that not much success had been achieved. Another amnesty scheme had been launched after the failure of the previous one that delivered only Rs. 3,770 crore. The gold monetisation scheme that the Prime Minster endorsed returned a meager 900 kilogrammes of gold. Similarly, Cleaning of Ganga, Swachchh Bharat and bullet trains had all been largely ignored by the budget with no fresh allocations or increased outlays, he pointed out.   More...

IOS Condolence on the demise of Hassan 'Abd Allah al-Turabi

New Delhi, March 7: The Institute of Objective expressed its immense grief and sorrow on the sad demise of Hassan 'Abd Allah al-Turabi, an eminent religious and Islamist political leader in Sudan, who passed away on March 5, 2016.

On his demise, Dr. M. Manzoor Alam, Chairman, Institute of Objective Studies said that the Muslim world has lost "one of the most influential figures in modern Sudanese politics, and a "longtime ideological leader". He was instrumental in institutionalizing shariah (Islamic law) in the northern part of the country, he further said. He recalled his meeting with Al-Turabi way back in late 70s in Riyadh where he interacted with him over the issues of Muslim world.

May Allah accept all his good deeds, bless him with the choicest place in the heaven and grant Muslim ummah all the patience to bear this loss, Aameen.

The Institute of Objective Studies organised a lecture on “Secular Subjects in Islamic Syllabi” on February 20, 2016 at its conference hall. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Ishtiaque Danish, Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, held that Islamic and modern education were not two different things in the early years of Islam. Mathematics and physics were part of the curriculum as the ordination in respect of Allah’s will had come through the Prophet (PBUH) which could not have been understood without mathematics. This perhaps was the reason why at the Suffa, in Masjid-i-Nabwi and nine other mosques, the teaching of mathematics and astronomy was included in the syllabus. As the teachings of the Prophet Muhamamd (PBUH) did not distinguish between Islamic and secular subjects, the question of separation of two subjects did not arise, he said. He insisted that Britain was believed to have distinguished between the two streams, but the moot question which still remained enigmatic was how knowledge found way into that country from Arabians.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies organised an Interactive Session with the Minister of Science, Technology, Environment and Population, Republic of Nepal, Vishwendra Paswan at its Conference hall on January 19, 2016. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the minister said that while drafting the new Constitution of Nepal, care had been taken to include all sections of society in order to ensure social justice. Saying that the new constitution was secular and democratic, he insisted that if the reservation to the weaker sections of society was provided in the Constitution, it would prove to be one of the best in the world. He expressed his government’s readiness to amend the Constitution adding that it required consensus among the other stakeholders as a two-third majority was needed to effect a change in the statute. The government was waiting for the response of other political parties, he said. Referring to the minorities, especially the Muslims, he said that their population was 45 lakh and the present Nepalese dispensation was eager to give reservation to them in proportion to their population.   More...

The Institute of Objective Studies organised a lecture on “Development of Islamic Economics and Finance in India” on January 9, 2016 in its conference hall. Delivering the lecture on the subject, Prof. Javed Ahmad Khan, officiating director, Centre for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, held that the concept of Islamic banking emerged after the growth of petro-dollars. This was a phenomenon that emerged some 50 years ago. He said that the central concept in interest-free banking and finance was justice, which was achieved mainly through the sharing of risk. Stakeholders were supposed to share profit and losses, and charging interest was prohibited. He noted that the risk could not be transferred from person to person or country to country. He said that one area that had not been adequately addressed was the role of interest-free banking in financial inclusion. Globally, interest-free banking had witnessed a significant increase, especially in the wake of the financial crisis a few years ago. According to Lagarde (2015), total Islamic finance assets were estimated at around US$ 2 trillion, practically a ten-fold increase a decade, and outperforming the growth of conventional finance in many places, he observed.   More...

A lecture on “Towards Islamic Methodology of Studying World Religions - Some Theoretical Issues” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its Conference hall on December 12, 2015. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi, former director, Shah-i-Hamdan Institute of Islamic Studies, University of Kashmir, Srinagar observed that the phenomenon of religion had attracted the attention of intellectuals and thinkers from the distant past to the present times. Owing to its presence everywhere, intellectuals from various fields of life arose to search for the origin, nature and function of religion in human life. He said that in the course of its history, religion had caught the attention of various academic disciplines, studied by anthropology, sociology, psychology, science, political science, theoretical economics and philosophy. He noted that it was during the 18th and 19th centuries when some important intellectual developments took place and the scientific method accompanied by a wealth of material on religious phenomenon penetrated into the West that the various religious theorists presented their respective theories of religion. He said that the early interpreters of religion theorised that religion was the result of rational effort to comprehend the basic question of existence. The first prominent interpreter among them was EB Taylor (1832-1917), who, surveying through the mass of material on primitives that was pouring into Europe during the 19th century, concluded that religion originated as primitives used their child-like reasoning to answer certain problems.   More...

IOS Felicitates Prof. (Dr) Seyed E. Hasnain

Padma Shri Prof. (Dr) Seyed E Hasnain of the Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, was felicitated by the Institute of Objective Studies at an impressive ceremony at the CIT Auditorium at Jamia Millia Islamia here on December 5, 2015 for his exceptional contribution to molecular biology and epidemiology of mycobacterium tuberculosis. Speaking on “Scientific Discoveries and Prophecies in the Holy Quran”, on the occasion, Dr. Hasnain noted that Allah revealed Quran to Prophet Mohammad (SW) 1400 years ago to guide humanity, but not a single word had been added to or subtracted from it afterwards. The predictions made in the Quran had been proved true by science. He said that ever since the Quran was revealed, it had possessed countless scientific, mathematical and historical miracles. “The divine knowledge is contained in the “Mother of Books (Ummul Kitab)” and the “Tablet Preserved (Lauh-i-Mahfooz)”, he said. He observed that many of the verses revealed in the Quran had only been recently discovered by science and the use of modern technology. A panel discussion on “Bihar Elections 2015: Impact on Social Fabric” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall on November 28, 2015. Initiating the discussion, senior journalist AU Asif said that the mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) romped home following rejection of the issues by the electorate raised by the BJP. Referring to the well-known journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai’s book on the parliamentary elections of 2014, he said that Rajdeep had predicted that the outcome of the elections would prove a trend-setter for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement during the current winter session of Parliament reaffirming his commitment to the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution was the first of its kind in the history of the country. Terming the unity among the political parties in Bihar as significant, he held that it should not be confined to winning elections. It should be a beginning for setting high standards of tolerance and promoting a composite culture, thus saving the Constitution from onslaughts. Aslam, held that the plight of Muslims had not changed even after more than six decades of Independence. This was a matter of serious concern. Referring to the Sachar Committee Report, he said that it also made it evident that the socio-economic deprivation of the community was fuelled by their lack of education and representation in the governance structures. The spatial distribution of population figures of Muslims revealed two distinct features. First, they were widespread and concentrated in selected districts. New Delhi: The Vice-President of India, M. Hamid Ansari, released the book Masadir-i- Seerat-i-Nabwi {sources of the biographies of the Prophet (SW)} Volume I & II written by Prof. M. Yasin Mazhar Siddiqui, at a function organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at the Conference Hall, Vice-President’s House here on November 20, 2015. Releasing the book, he said it was a research work with erudition, adding that it would be fruitful for students and teachers alike. They would have an opportunity to benefit from the sources of the biographies of the Prophet (SW). He hoped that on the completion of the project undertaken by the IOS, an encyclopedia of Islam, would be in place. He said that the Islamic chroniclers of the history of Islam who found a place on the very first page of volume I, would be a subject of further research. He made out a case for continuous research on the subject and the publication of more and more books on it. He said that such authors and history should not be confined to shelves; they must come out in order to benefit the seekers of knowledge. Frankly admitting that he was never a student of history and Islamic Studies, he said that he always tried to get a whiff of fresh air from history and Islamic Studies. Initiating the discussion senior journalist, AU Asif, referred to the veteran journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai’s book on Lok Sabha elections-2014 and said that the scenario post-parliamentary polls had changed for the better after the recently-held Bihar assembly elections. He observed that the voters rose above the OBC politics and exercised their right to franchise. Muslims too played a significant role in tilting the balance in favour of the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) by silently casting their vote. The Institute of Objective Studies hosted a lecture on the “Turkish General Elections: Results and Implications” on November 10, 2015 at the conference hall of the Institute. Delivering the lecture Prof. Arshi Khan of Department of Political Science, AMU, Aligarh and Member of General Assembly, IOS, held that the stunning victory of the Justice and Development (AK) party of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, in the snap poll called on November 1 last would turn over a new leaf in the country. The election was necessitated because AK refused to accept losing its majority in the previous poll in June. The religious-nationalist party’s campaign strategy involved cracking down on Kurdish militants. He believed that AK would use its political capital to restart the peace process with the Kurds. He said that Erdogan and AK were optimistic that they could use their pro-religious credentials to split conservative Kurdish parties. He observed that AK officials had begun discussing plans for Erdogan’s long-standing ambition: Changing the constitution to create an executive presidency. Erdogan would allow Ahmet Devutoglu, the prime minister, to wield official power, while pulling the strings in the background. The Institute of Objective Studies hosted a lecture on the “Unity of Ummah: Limits and Etiquette of Disagreement” on October 31, 2015 at the conference hall of the Institute. Maulana Ateeq Ahmad Bastavi, ustad of Tafseer, Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulema, Lucknow, convenor, Darul Qaza Committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, founder-member and secretary, Islamic Fiqh Academy and member, General Assembly of the IOS, who delivered the lecture, emphasised that prophets from Adam (PBUH) to the Prophet Hazrat Mohammad Mustafa (SAW) spread the message of oneness of God and unceasingly strove for impressing upon mankind to keep itself away from paganism and multiplicity of godhood. As far as the existence of one God is concerned, there was no difference among the prophets. They invited their ummah to follow God, who is the Master of all the creation transcending all the worlds. He said that the holy Quran has preserved the record of the call of a number of prophets to their followers in several surahs. Referring to the teachings of Prophet Adam and Prophet Noah, he said that their call was centered on the existence of God. This could be treated as the beginning of the Unity of Ummah, he noted. He remarked that Surah Hijrah contained teachings that pointed to unity among Muslims. Delivering the lecture, Prof. Arshi Khan of the Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University and Member of the General Assembly, IOS, commented that democracy was not only the name of the elected and contested institutions, but it was directly connected with the legitimacy and the performance of the government. In plural societies like India, the role of democracy differed from being the agency of administration and control, because the governing institutions were expected to provide security, rights and participation to the excluded minority community as major part of constitutional obligations. Condolence meeting on September 28, 2015 at IOS, New Delhi

New Delhi, Sept. 28: The staff of Institute of Objective Studies, led by its Chairman Dr Mohammad Manzoor Alam, mourned the death of Islamic scholar and visionary leader of international Islamic movement, Dr Jamal Barzinji. Dr Barzinji, who died on September 26 in the United States, had been battling a rare form of cancer. He was 76.

The condolence meet, which began with a recital from the Quran by Maulana Khalid Nadvi of the IOS, was chaired by the Chairman Dr Mohammad Manzoor Alam, who had been a close associate of Dr Barzinji for decades. He stated that the entire purpose for existence rested on the twin fundamental questions of the purpose of life and the way to lead it. In our thought process, man was missing, because the way we received education, the manual which would have guided us, was missing. Elaborating upon his point, he said that we did get education, but that was worthless as the manual was missing. He observed that whatever man did, thought and spoke, was done in search of pleasure. Every human being in the world had the motivation of pleasure. Pleasure was, in fact, the willing acceptance of something. While noting that the ways to attain pleasure differed from man to man, he said that the denial of something was tantamount to unwillingness or rejection of pleasure. The Institute of Objective Studies organised a discussion on “Stabilising Population Growth Rates: Discussion on Census 2011” in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, JMI at the conference room of the Department here on September 14, 2015. Former Registrar-General and Census Commissioner of India, Dr. AR Nanda, the main speaker, said that census was essentially based on demographic data and its scientific analysis could be done from different angles. Holding that the annual growth rate was the best measure to determine the rate of fertility, he said that it was still at 2.3 percent and India had to strive for achieving 2.1 percent rate of fertility. He noted that the sex ratio had also improved to 943 per thousand from 930 per thousand. He pointed out that there were a lot of conceptual myths regarding population. But population could not be stabilised. There were no quick fixes to limit the family, but huge distribution of wealth and income definitely played a role in high, medium and low growth rate. While arguing against Malthusian thinking on population, he said that policy imponderables demanded that the younger generation which was our largest asset must be put to better use. More...

IOS hosts lecture on “Origin and Development of Hinduism”

The Institute of Objective Studies organised a lecture on the “Origin and Development of Hinduism” at the conference hall of the IOS here on September 12, 2015. President, Universal Knowledge Trust and former Secretary General, IOS, A R Agwan, who spoke on the subject, held that two prominent views about the origin of Hinduism were prevalent. While one section of scholars and researchers believed that Hinduism had its origin in the present Indian territory, the other group, mostly led by Western scholars and indologists reached the conclusion that the Aryans were key contributors in the formation and development of Hinduism. He said that the origin of the word Hindu was itself debated by academics. The most argued interpretation could be that it had its roots in “Sapta-Sindhu”, which generally meant the area of the present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan and part of western India. He remarked that in the prevailing socio-political accounts, Hindus hardly took that territory as their “holy land.” They would also not like the word “Hindu” to be replaced by “Sindhu,” he said. He argued that the main hurdle in accepting Indian origin of Hinduism was archeology. The archeological evidence to prove either the so-called “Ramayana Route” or the existence of the people of the Mahabharata period could not be found out, creating doubts regarding the historicity of these major events imbedded in Hindu traditions. IOS organises “Discourse on Major Books on Seerah”

New Delhi, Aug. 29: “Discourse on Major Books on Seerah”, was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall here today. Former Dean, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, Prof. Mohsin Usmani Nadvi who delivered the lecture, held that the number of books profiling the life of the Prophet (Seerah) in various languages ran into thousands. This included a fairly good number of books written by non-Muslims. He said that during the times of the Caliphs (RA), the work on Seerah and the Hadith could not be taken up as the main concern then was to save verses of the Holy Quran by compiling them. Chroniclers concentrated on the life of the Prophet (SAW) only after they were sure that the compilation of the Quran was complete and there was no apprehension of duplication. IOS Organises Consultative Meeting on Legal Aid

With a view to providing legal aid to the Muslims of village Atali in Haryana who had been targeted by communal mischief-makers for carrying out repair works in a mosque, a consultative meeting was held at the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) here on August 7, 2015 under the chairmanship of the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Mr. Justice AM Ahmadi. After going into all the aspects of the issue, it was decided at the meeting to file an application in the Supreme Court in this connection invoking Article 32 of the Indian Constitution which guarantees redressal of grievances. It gives the right to an individual to knock at the doors of the Supreme Court for enforcing such guarantee if hurdles were coming in the way. New Delhi, April 25: A lecture on “Inadequacy of Protection of Minorities Languages under the Indian Constitution” was organised by the Institute of Objective Studies at its conference hall here today. Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court of India and member, General Assembly of IOS, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed delivered the lecture, in which he insisted that provisions relating to the protection of minorities’ languages in the Constitution of India were express as well as implied. Besides, certain judgments of the Supreme Court had upheld the rights of religious and linguistic minorities. He said that the minorities had been given the right to manage their religious affairs. Hence religious denominations had a right to establish and maintain religious and charitable institutions. He held that Article 29 of the Constitution implicitly referred to the protection of the minorities’ languages by saying that any section that was in a minority could be guaranteed the protection of its distinct language. Describing Article 30 as the conscience of the nation, he said that the minorities whether religious or linguistic, were given the right to set up and administer institutions of their choice. This implied that by virtue of being a linguistic and religious minority, a community could use the language of its choice as medium of instruction. New Delhi: April 18: The Institute of Objective Studies organised the Seventh Qazi Mujahidul Islam Memorial Lecture on “Sufism: Relevance and Significance in Contemporary Context” at the conference hall of the Institute here on April 18, 2015. Delivering the lecture, Shah Qadri Syed Mustafa Rifai Jilani Nadwi, Sajjadah Nashin, Khanqah Qadriya wo Rafaiya, Bangalore, Founder President of Idaarah Al-Islah, Bangalore and Member General Assembly, IOS, New Delhi, noted that Sufism did not denote merely to dress up in woolen garments and patched clothes, nor did it mean to go into a state of ecstasy at a melodious devotional song (qawwali) sung by a qawwal. He explained that a Sufi’s exterior and his inner self should be clean, purified and without malice towards anybody. Besides, a Sufi was required to protect and preserve his knowledge, behaviour, religion and Shariah. Officer and Vice-Chancellor of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad, who delivered the lecture, focused on the constitutional provisions for the religious minorities to profess and propagate their religious belief. He examined how the freedom of religion, right to equality and the right to maintain their cultural identity guaranteed under the Constitution were being allowed to be practised unfettered. Some Progress at Last

After years of effort the struggle for having a full-fledged Islamic banking system in India met with a moderate measure of success when the State Bank of India announced last week that it would launch a Shariah-compliant mutual fund in December.

It is for the first time that a state-owned bank is to start an Islamic financial instrument in India. The SBI has got both the Reserve Bank of India’s and the government’s permission for it. Happily, Muslim leaders have already welcomed it. More...

Dr Mohammad Manzoor Alam on the new development towards Islamic banking in India

The Reserve Bank Governor Mr D. Subba Rao’s recent announcement constitutes a significant advance in the field of Islamic banking and finance in India, which has been a cherished goal for all of us, and for the attainment of which the Institute of Objective Studies has worked tirelessly over the last quarter century.

Although in Islamic finance we have already made substantial advance in India in terms of growing acceptance of Shariah-compliant investments and other Shariah-compliant financial services and products. The IOS, with the collaboration of financial consultants Estwind, developed a Shariah index of thousands of companies in India, which has helped pious Muslim investors to invest safely.

However, Islamic banking itself has been a far more tougher nut to crack. Finally, it has begun to crack and we hope to have a proper Islamic banking system in India, which so far had no such institution. Despite a huge body of research carried out by the IOS, and a large number of books published by us, introducing a large number of issues of Islamic economics to the wider society, the scene did not seem to change even a wee bit.
